Initial approach to treatment of patients with intermediate, high, or very high risk localized prostate cancer

Newly diagnosed prostate cancer is risk stratified based on digital rectal examination, serum PSA, prostate biopsy, and imaging studies. Intermediate-risk disease is further subdivided into favorable and unfavorable subsets, although definitions are variable. This is discussed separately in UpToDate.
