Evaluation of suspected Bell's palsy

Evaluation of suspected Bell's palsy
Bell's palsy is the term used for isolated peripheral facial nerve impairment that is idiopathic. Evaluation for secondary causes of facial nerve impairment may include neuroimaging, directed laboratory testing, electrodiagnostic testing, and lumbar puncture for cerebrospinal fluid analysis. Refer to UpToDate topic on Bell's palsy for additional details.

* Motor symptoms may also be accompanied by ipsilateral symptoms including hyperacusis, impaired taste, and/or reduced tearing.

¶ Some patients with peripheral facial nerve weakness and ipsilateral mild facial numbness may be diagnosed with Bell's palsy after exclusion of other causes of cranial polyneuropathy. Evaluation to exclude other causes of cranial polyneuropathy is warranted. Refer to the UpToDate topic on Bell's palsy for additional details.
