There are several variations of the lunge exercise. The standing lunge shown here is a basic exercise that helps to improve balance and increase strength, particularly of the hip stabilizers. Important elements include keeping the trunk tall and straight and ensuring that the hip, knee, and foot stay aligned (ie, the knee does not cave in) throughout the movement.
