A family of transient receptor potential (TRP) cation channels are cell sensors made of intrinsic membrane proteins and a cation-permeable pore region. Transient receptor potential melastatin 8 receptor (TRPM8) is involved in environmental cold detection, and transient receptor potential vanilloid type 2 (TRPV2) is a calcium-permeable cation channel that is activated by heat. The schematic is a representation of the TRP channel pore showing the two regions of constriction (gates).
S6, S5: transmembrane helices.
