Open reduction and internal fixation

Open reduction and internal fixation
For open reduction and internal fixation ("ORIF") surgery, the doctor makes a cut in the skin over the fracture, then moves the broken bone into the correct place. They use "hardware" to hold the bone in place while it heals. This can involve metal plates, rods or nails, pins, wires, or screws. After surgery, the cut is closed with stitches or staples.
