Non-tender inguinal swelling in male infants and children: Diagnostic approach

Non-tender inguinal swelling in male infants and children: Diagnostic approach
Causes of non-tender inguinal swelling in boys include lymphadenopathy, retractile testis, undescended or ectopic testis, a reducible inguinal hernia, spermatic cord hydrocele, or, rarely, a soft tissue tumor. This algorithm is intended for use in conjunction with additional UpToDate content. For more details, refer to UpToDate topics on inguinal swelling in children.

* Inguinal lymphadenopathy may indicate nearby skin and soft tissue infections of the buttocks, genitalia, groin, or ipsilateral lower extremity. When part of generalized lymphadenopathy, it can point to serious systemic disease. Refer to UpToDate content on inguinal and generalized lymphadenopathy in children.

¶ Ultrasound or other imaging is necessary to locate the testis. Refer to UpToDate topics on undescended or ectopic testes.

Δ Ultrasound may provide additional diagnostic information.

◊ Examples of benign tumors of the inguinal canal include lipomas, mesothelial cysts, and dermoid cysts. Soft tissue sarcomas are the most common malignant tumor.
