Management of noncomplicated skin/soft tissue congenital hemangiomas

Management of noncomplicated skin/soft tissue congenital hemangiomas

RICH: rapidly involuting congenital hemangioma; PICH: partially involuting congenital hemangioma; NICH: noninvoluting congenital hemangioma.

* Newborns with large lesions (eg, >5 cm) are at high risk for complications (eg, ulceration, coagulopathy, bleeding, high-output cardiac failure, function impairment) and should be promptly referred to a specialist or multidisciplinary group with special expertise in vascular anomalies for close monitoring and early surgical treatment.

¶ The optimal timing of surgical excision of NICH/PICH has not been determined. However, experts recommend surgery during the preschool age, when the child begins to manifest a facial or body image.

Δ Some congenital hemangiomas may show expansion in late childhood or adolescence after an initial period of stability.
