Stage 1*
2 or more autoantibodies

Dysglycemia:
  • Fasting glucose 100 to 125 mg/dL (5.6 to 6.9 mmol/L)
  • 2-hour postprandial glucose 140 to 199 mg/dL (7.8 to 11.1 mmol/L)
  • A1C 5.7 to 6.4%
Stage 3
Autoantibodies may become absent
Symptomatic (usually but not uniformly)
Overt hyperglycemia, meets ADA diagnostic criteria for diabetes

A1C: glycated hemoglobin; ADA: American Diabetes Association.

* Virtually all individuals with stage 1 type 1 diabetes will progress to stage 3 type 1 diabetes, approximately 35% within 5 years, 70% within 10 years, and >95% within 15 years.
