* MRI prior to prostate biopsy has been shown to increase the detection of clinically significant prostate cancer. It should be considered before initial biopsy, but strongly recommended prior to repeat biopsy. Refer to the UpToDate topic on prostate biopsy for detailed explanations.

¶ We suggest performing concurrent systematic biopsy with any targeted biopsy to maximize cancer detection rate. In some practices, microultrasound may be used to guide initial or repeat prostate biopsy as well as MRI.
