Indications for polysomnography in patients with neuromuscular or chest wall disorders
This algorithm summarizes our approach to performing polysomnography in patients with neuromuscular or chest wall disorders who are at risk of a sleep-related breathing disorder. The evaluation for a sleep disorder is often done in conjunction with evaluation for respiratory muscle weakness and requires testing for the latter. This algorithm is intended for use in conjunction with additional UpToDate content. For additional details, refer to UTD content on manifestations and diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea and respiratory neuromuscular weakness.

CBC: complete blood count; ECG: electrocardiography; FVC: forced vital capacity; PEmax: maximal expiratory pressure; PImax: maximal inspiratory pressure; SDB: sleep-disordered breathing.

* If respiratory muscle weakness is strongly suspected, we obtain additional testing to confirm the diagnosis, including peak cough flow and sniff nasal inspiratory pressure. However, such testing is not needed to determine whether polysomnography is indicated.
