Spine anatomy for interventional pain injections

Spine anatomy for interventional pain injections
This figure shows the anatomy relevant for injections for patients suspected of having facet joint related pain.
  • The medial branch nerves are branches of the spinal dorsal rami. They innervate the facet joints of the spine from above and below the joint. Injection is performed at the junction of the superior articular process and the transverse process.
  • For intra-articular facet joint injection a needle is inserted into the joint for the injection.
