Pulmonary valve stenosis: Indications for and choice of intervention

Pulmonary valve stenosis: Indications for and choice of intervention

PS: pulmonary valve stenosis.

* Most stenotic pulmonary valves (including dome-shaped valves and some dysplastic valves) are amenable to balloon valvotomy.

¶ The frequency of clinical monitoring including echocardiography and exercise testing is determined by the patient's physiologic stage.

Δ Choice of procedure is based upon a multidisciplinary assessment of factors including likelihood of successful surgical valvotomy, feasibility of transcatheter pulmonary valve implantation, and available expertise and experience.

For patients with asymptomatic severe PS who are not candidates for balloon valvotomy, timing of surgical intervention is based upon an individualized assessment weighing the risks and benefits of intervention.

◊ Among candidates for balloon valvotomy, patients who have a concurrent indication for cardiac surgery may instead undergo surgical pulmonary valvotomy or surgical pulmonary valve replacement.
