This algorithm is intended for use in conjunction with UpToDate content on the treatment of calcium pyrophosphate crystal deposition (CPPD) disease.

NSAIDs: nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs.

* Resistance to first-line antiinflammatory therapy is defined as moderate to severe symptoms that are persistent or worsening despite 48 to 72 hours of treatment.
