Approach to fluid management for patients with cholera

Approach to fluid management for patients with cholera

IV: intravenously; ORS: oral rehydration solution; WHO: World Health Organization.

* For children with severe dehydration, the approach outlined here is appropriate in setting of hemoglobin ≥6 g/dL and in the absence of severe malnutrition. Refer to UpToDate text for discussion of management for children with severe anemia or severe malnutrition.

¶ Use of Ringer's lactate or Ringer's lactate with 5 percent dextrose is preferred. Normal saline may be used but is less preferable because it does not contain potassium to replace losses, nor a base to correct acidosis.
