Evaluation of stillbirth

Consultation with a perinatal pathologist is helpful. The ability to detect a cause of stillbirth from fetal and placental findings often depends upon the experience of the pathologist.

* Maternal testing for disorders such as fetomaternal hemorrhage, diabetes, alloimmunization, syphilis, inherited hemoglobinopathy, infection, and/or antiphospholipid syndrome does not need to be repeated postpartum if recent results are available. Urine drug testing for cocaine and methamphetamine may be indicated in patients with abruption.
