Fifth metatarsal apophysis and tuberosity fracture
Fifth metatarsal apophysis and tuberosity fracture
The close-up view from the AP radiograph of a child's foot shows a normal apophysis of the fifth metatarsal, where the peroneus brevis tendon attaches (indicated by dashed arrow), and which is oriented approximately parallel to the long axis of the metatarsal. This normal apophysis is not to be confused with a fracture of the proximal fifth metatarsal (indicated by solid arrow). Such fractures tend to be perpendicular to the long axis of the metatarsal.
