Notes
  • All Age results are reported as either completed days, completed weeks and days, or completed months and weeks.
  • As stressed in the American Academy of Pediatrics 2004 policy statement[1], the following Age definitions must be consistently applied.
  • Gestational age is the time interval between the first day of the LMP and the day of birth. This is also known as Menstrual age. For use in growth chart plots or research reports, Gestational age should be rounded down to completed weeks.
    • If Gestational age estimator is set to the first day of the LMP, there may be minor variance of up to 6 days in this estimate of Gestational age.
    • If the DOC or the date of embryo implant is used, the calculator accounts for the difference between these dates and the LMP to calculate the Gestational age.
      • The DOC is assumed to be 14 days after the first day of the LMP.
      • The date of embryo implant is considered to be 3 or 5 days after the DOC.
  • Chronological age is the time interval between Date of birth and Assessment date. This is also known as Postnatal age. In these calculations, the average month is 30.4375 days (365.25 days per year/12 months per year). Therefore, calendar-based annual and monthly birthdays may not align exactly with calculated Chronological age.
  • Postmenstrual age is the Gestational age (time interval between the first day of the LMP and the date of birth) added to Chronological age. This may be used in the assessment of hospitalized preterm infants.
  • Corrected age [days] equals Chronological age [days] + Gestational age [days] - 280 [days]. This is also known as Adjusted age. For very young preterm infants, the Corrected age is often negative. Negative Corrected age is the time interval until term gestation would have been achieved.
  • Age correction is less valuable for the developmental assessment of children over 36 months of Chronological age.
  • For more information on the use of gestational age, refer to UpToDate content on the postnatal assessment of gestational age.

Only digits 0 to 9 and a single decimal point (".") are acceptable as numeric inputs. Attempted input of other characters into a numeric field may lead to an incorrect result.
