In preterm infants, especially ELBW infants, Candida is an important cause of invasive systemic illness that can be associated with substantial morbidity and mortality. The range of clinical severity is broad, ranging from isolated catheter-associated bloodstream infection to life-threatening disseminated multiorgan infection.
