Insulin concentrations during selective arterial calcium stimulation testing

Insulin concentrations during selective arterial calcium stimulation testing
Time (sec) Insulin (microU/mL)
Gastroduodenal artery Superior mesenteric artery Splenic artery* Left hepatic artery
0 16 16 10 12
20 21 24 15 20
40 28 30 18 75
60 22 18 20 100
Data represent insulin concentrations measured in blood sampled from the hepatic vein after intra-arterial calcium injection into the arteries supplying the pancreas (gastroduodenal artery, superior mesenteric artery, splenic artery) and liver (left hepatic artery). The greatest increment in insulin concentration is evident in the left hepatic artery, indicating hepatic metastatic disease as the origin of insulin excess. To convert serum insulin values to pmol/L, multiply by 6.0.
* Splenic artery was significantly truncated.
