Brain MRI of 4-year-old with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1)
Brain MRI of 4-year-old with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1)
4-year-old with NF1, FASI, chiasmatic glioma, and plexiform neurofibroma. Transverse axial T2-FLAIR MR images (A, B) demonstrate multifocal white matter lesions consistent with FASI (cystic myelinopathy) in basal ganglia and caudal midbrain (arrowheads). Mass-like enlargement of the optic chiasm (circle) is consistent with chiasmatic glioma. T2-FLAIR (C) and fat-suppressed T2-weighted (D,E) MR images demonstrate a large, multispatial microcystic mass (arrows) in the nasopharynx and left neck, consistent with pathology-proven plexiform neurofibroma. Fat-saturated, postcontrast T1-weighted images (F, G) show the nonenhancing chiasmatic glioma (F) and the heterogeneously enhancing plexiform neurofibroma (G).
FASI: focal areas of high signal intensity; FLAIR: fluid-attenuated inversion recovery; MR: magnetic resonance; NF1: neurofibromatosis type 1.
