Pectoralis myocutaneous flap

Pectoralis myocutaneous flap
For this type of flap, skin and muscle from the chest are removed with surgery and reattached to another part of the body. In this example, the flap stays connected to the blood vessels in its original location. It is rotated to rebuild part of the throat that was removed to treat cancer:
  • (A) The flap is created by cutting out a section of skin and muscle. It stays connected to its blood vessels at 1 end.
  • (B) The flap is rotated upward and passed under the skin.
  • (C) Then, the flap is stitched into place in its new location.
