Ankle medial clear space

The joint space between the talus and the medial malleolus is used to help gauge whether a lateral ankle fracture is stable. This space is commonly referred to as the medial clear space. Widening of the space on a weight-bearing plain radiograph suggests additional medial soft tissue injury and instability.
