Scanning electron micrograph of an acanthocyte
Acanthocytes, from the Greek "acantha" (thorn), have only a few spicules of various sizes at irregular intervals on the RBC surface. Some experts consider a spur cell to be an extreme form of an acanthocyte. Refer to UpToDate for the causes and evaluation of acanthocytosis.
EM: electron micrograph; RBC: red blood cell.
