This algorithm is to be used in conjunction with UpToDate content on the treatment of acute otitis media in adults. Specific considerations in therapy selection, duration of treatment, and course warranting ENT referral, ID consultation, or hospitalization are discussed in the topic.
An algorithm for treatment of patients with penicillin or cephalosporin allergy is separately available.
AOM: acute otitis media; ENT: ear, nose, and throat doctor; ID: infectious diseases; IV: intravaneously; MRSA: methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.
* Patients at risk for severe infection or resistance include persons who live in regions with ≥10% penicillin-non-susceptible S. pneumoniae (check local antibiogram if available), are older than 65 years, are immunocompromised, or have used antibiotics in the past month.
