* There are multiple products available, including several without a prescription. An over-the-counter example is ketotifen fumarate 0.035% (dose for children ≥3 years and adults is one drop per eye twice daily). ¶ Toxic conjunctivitis can be caused by preservatives in ocular medications or by the medications themselves. The patient may report that certain eye drops seemed to help initially but then eye symptoms progressively worsened or that the drops began to burn and eyelids became swollen.
