Evaluation and management of infant or young child with suspected breath-holding spells (BHS)

Evaluation and management of infant or young child with suspected breath-holding spells (BHS)

BRUE: brief resolved unexplained event in infancy; CBC: complete blood count; ECG: electrocardiogram; EEG: electroencephalography; LOC: loss of consciousness; LQTS: long QT syndrome; SIDS: sudden infant death syndrome.

* Children with minor head trauma should be evaluated for findings that raise concern for clinically important traumatic brain injury (ciTBI).

¶ EEG and seizure evaluation are warranted if patients have additional seizure-like episodes not associated with breath-holding, a prolonged postictal period after breath-holding, or unclear description of event(s). Rare patients may have both BHS and seizures/epilepsy.

Δ Some experts treat all children who have BHS with iron supplementation, irrespective of iron level.
