Vulvovaginal candidiasis: Treatment of confirmed Candida krusei infection

Vulvovaginal candidiasis: Treatment of confirmed Candida krusei infection

Candida krusei does not respond to oral fluconazole therapy and therefore requires an alternate treatment approach. As there are limited data to guide the treatment of C. krusei, this algorithm is also based on our clinical experience.

If possible, we suggest patients with persistent symptomatic C. krusei be referred to specialists in gynecologic infection for evaluation and treatment.

BV: bacterial vaginosis; VVC: vulvovaginal candidiasis.

* Discussion of testing options to confirm VVC and/or other causes of symptoms are presented in related UpToDate content on abnormal vaginal discharge.

¶ Itraconazole and ketoconazole have been associated with hepatoxocity and monitoring is required. Refer to UpToDate content for additional information.
