Several medications used for acute (symptomatic) headache treatment may cause MOH when used to excess. The threshold of use that confers the risk of developing MOH varies by class of medication, duration of use, and individual behavioral factors. Refer to UpToDate for additional details.

* Clinical experience suggests even lower thresholds of monthly exposure to barbiturates and opioids may cause MOH. Use of these medication classes for the treatment of primary headache should be avoided.
