Apoptosis is a form of programmed cell death that may be seen in MDS with cytopenias. These images are from the peripheral blood smear of a patient who presented with anemia and thrombocytopenia; bone marrow aspirate and biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of MDS with multilineage dysplasia. The peripheral blood smear demonstrated neutrophils undergoing progressive stages of apoptosis (arrows).
