Noninfectious risk factors
Hematologic cancer Typically indefinite (discretion of the blood center director)
Nonhematologic cancer (except if localized and unable to spread hematogenously, such as cervical cancer in situ or basal cell skin cancer, in which case there is no deferral) Typically 1 to 5 years after symptom free and considered cured (discretion of the blood center director)
Neurodegenerative disease (Alzheimer disease, Parkinson disease) Discretion of the blood center director
Medications (includes those with risks for teratogenicity and bleeding and associated with certain infectious exposures) Refer to separate UpToDate table
Refer to a separate table for medication deferrals. Refer to UpToDate, AABB, and FDA for additional details and rationale. Institutions can be more conservative than these recommended deferrals, but they cannot be less conservative. Donors must also answer questions related to their general state of health and must follow guidelines for age and weight cutoffs, pregnancy, and donation frequencies.

AABB: Association for the Advancement of Blood and Biotherapies; AIDS: acquired immunodeficiency syndrome; CJD: Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease; COVID-19: coronavirus disease 2019; FDA: US Food and Drug Administration; HBV: hepatitis B virus; HCV: hepatitis C virus; HIV: human immunodeficiency virus; vCJD: variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.

* Time-limited deferrals are based on the time since the exposure. Indefinite deferrals are for an unspecified period of time. Permanent deferral means the donor can never donate again. Refer to UpToDate for details and a discussion of the rationale.

¶ A live attenuated vaccine for COVID-19 has not been produced, but if it were to be produced, the deferral would be 2 weeks.
