Tyramine is a substance that is naturally found in the body. It is also found in some foods, especially foods that are aged or fermented.

If you take a monoamine oxidase inhibitor ("MAOI") antidepressant and eat foods with a lot of tyramine, too much tyramine can build up in your body. This can cause your blood pressure to get too high, which is dangerous and needs emergency treatment.

The left side of the table lists examples of foods and drinks that are high in tyramine. Avoid these if you take an MAOI antidepressant.

The right side of the table lists examples of foods and drinks that are low in tyramine. You can have these.

* "Cured" means the meat or fish has been treated with salt and nitrate or nitrite. Cured foods might have high amounts of tyramine. Do not have these foods. Fresh, non-cured meats and fish are low in tyramine. You can have these foods.
