ANSWER — Incorrect.
Hypertriglyceridemia is certainly a risk factor for acute pancreatitis, especially at levels above 1000 mg/dL and perhaps at lower levels also. However, the patient has no symptoms or signs of acute pancreatitis at the present time. While it is prudent to rule out pancreatitis with laboratory studies, the approach to this patient at this time should emphasize control of his diabetes and hypertriglyceridemia.
