Excessive femoral anteversion

Excessive femoral anteversion

Femoral anteversion is the angular difference between the axis of the femoral neck and the transcondylar axis of the femur.

(A) Femur with excessive femoral anteversion: The plane of the proximal femur (the femoral head, neck, and greater trochanter, indicated by the dashed line) is about 60 degrees from the plane of the femoral condyles of the distal femur (indicated by the solid line). Note that as the femoral head rotates anteriorly, the greater trochanter rotates posteriorly.

(B) Femur with normal anteversion: the plane of the proximal femur (dashed line) is about 10 to 15 degrees anterior to the plane of the femoral condyles of the distal femur (solid line).
