Placental malaria infection

Hematoxylin and eosin stained placental parenchyma with malarial sequestration. The intervillous space demonstrates numerous infected red blood cells and hemozoin pigment in red blood cells and histiocytes. The infant was liveborn at 38 weeks of gestation. The blue arrows point to examples of red blood cells containing pigment and the black arrow points to an example of a pigment-containing histiocyte.
