Regulation of hematopoiesis via growth factors and cytokines

Regulation of hematopoiesis via growth factors and cytokines
This figure illustrates the hierarchical relationships of multipotent hematopoietic stem cells, progenitors, and mature cells of the myelopoietic, erythrocyte, and platelet lineages together with major growth factors, cytokines, and their actions. The involved growth factors and cytokines have overlapping actions during hematopoietic differentiation, as indicated, and, for most lineages, optimal development requires a combination of early- and late-acting factors. Refer to UpToDate topics on hematopoietic stem cells and myelopoiesis for further details.
LTR-HSC: long-term repopulating hematopoietic stem cell; STR-HSC: short-term repopulating hematopoietic stem cell; SCF: stem cell factor; IL: interleukin; CMP: common myeloid progenitor; CLP: common lymphoid progenitor; MEP: megakaryocyte-erythroid progenitor; GMP: granulocyte-myeloid progenitor; CFU: colony-forming unit; BFU: blast-forming unit; Epo: erythropoietin; Tpo: thrombopoietin; G-CSF: granulocyte colony-stimulating factor; M-CSF: monocyte/macrophage colony-stimulating factor; GM-CSF: granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor; TNF: tumor necrosis factor.
