Pneumococcal adherence

Pneumococcal adherence
Scanning electron micrograph of a pneumococcus attaching to a human lung cell. Pneumococci rarely make pili or fimbriae in order to adhere to cells. Rather, they decorate their cell wall with proteins that bind to human cell carbohydrates or the receptor for platelet activating factor, creating direct contact between the bacteria and the host cell over a large area.
