Eye manifestations of HSV-1 infection

Eye manifestations of HSV-1 infection
Different eye manifestations of herpes simplex virus-1 infection.
(A) Corneal epithelial disease with damaged epithelial cells observed as "dendrites" after staining with dyes.
(B) Corneal stromal disease or "disciform keratitis"; this reflects severe damage to infected epithelial cells, producing stromal edema with corneal clouding.
(C) Necrotizing stromal disease in which infiltration of inflammatory cells and neovascularization results in destruction of the cornea, glaucoma, and dense scarring.
(D) Keratouveitis in which mononuclear cell clusters, termed "keratic precipitates," can be seen in the corneal epithelium.
