Reduces illegal opioid use as well as the use of other drugs, thus diminishing the risk of hepatitis, HIV/AIDS, and other sexually transmitted infections
Helps to remove the individual from the drug-seeking environment
Eliminates illegal behaviors, such as engaging in sexual services in exchange for money or other material compensation
Prevents fluctuation of the individual's drug level over the course of the day
Reduces maternal mortality and severe maternal morbidity
Leads to improvement in maternal nutrition and infant birth weight
Improves the individual's ability to participate in prenatal care and treatment of opioid use disorder
Enhances the individual's ability to prepare for the birth of their infant and begin homemaking; stabilized individuals on MOUD are more likely to retain custody of their children
Children are more closely monitored when the mother is part of a treatment program for opioid use disorder
Reduces the frequency of obstetric complications
