Causes of Eisenmenger syndrome

Causes of Eisenmenger syndrome
Atrial shunts*
Atrial septal defects
Primum, secundum, sinus venosus, coronary sinus
Common atrium
Total anomalous pulmonary venous connection
Partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection
Ventricular shunts
Ventricular septal defect
Single ventricle
Transposition of the great vessels with VSD
Double outlet right ventricle
Atrioventricular canal
Aortic shunts
Patent ductus arteriosus
Aortopulmonary window (defect)
Truncus arteriosus
Pulmonic valve atresia with VSD and large collateral vessels

VSD: ventricular septal defect; ASD: atrial septal defect.

* There is controversy regarding the role of ASDs in the development of Eisenmenger syndrome. Some experts believe that pulmonary hypertension in patients with secundum ASDs (which occur in less than 10%) is due to the coincidental occurrence of idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension in these patients.
