Maisonneuve stress view

Stress radiographs may reveal injuries not apparent on standard views. In the x-ray above, the application of an external rotation force to the foot reveals a widening of the medial tibiotalar space (arrow). This is indicative of a sprain or rupture of the tibiofibular syndesmosis. There may also be an associated fracture (Maisonneuve fracture) of the proximal fibula (not seen on this view).
