Tricuspid regurgitation CW Doppler

This echocardiographic still frame demonstrates Doppler interrogation of tricuspid insufficiency to estimate the gradient between the right ventricle and the right atrium. The continuous wave Doppler beam, represented by the dotted cursor line, is directed into the tricuspid insufficiency jet in this parasternal long axis inflow window. Using the modified Bernoulli equation (pressure = 4 [velocity]²), the Doppler velocity of 3.3 m/second translates into a gradient between the right atrium and right ventricle of 44 mmHg; adding the estimated right atrial pressure of 10 mmHg, the estimated right ventricular pressure in this patient is 54 mmHg.
