Post-transcriptional modification of mRNA

Post-transcriptional modification of mRNA
Pre-mRNA transcripts are unsuitable for protein translation. Introns must be removed through a process called splicing to align the exons for their subsequent translation. The spliced RNA is an unstable molecule with highly reactive moieties at both the 5' and 3' ends. Addition of the 5' cap and the 3' polyA tail are critical for stabilization of the RNA and subsequent metabolism.
mRNA: messenger ribonucleic acid.
