Incidence of major clinical end points after percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) with (dashed line) or without (solid line) insertion of a balloon-expandable stent in 528 patients with stable angina and a single coronary lesion. Stenting was associated with a statistically significant reduction in major end points, which included restenosis requiring intervention with surgery or repeat PTCA (which accounted for the majority of events), myocardial infarction, death, or a cerebrovascular accident.
