Portosystemic encephalopathy after TIPS

Changes in the portosystemic encephalopathy (PSE) index in patients treated with endoscopic sclerotherapy (EST, left) or insertion of a transjugular intrahepatic stent shunt (TIPS, right). There were no significant changes in the PSE index with EST, whereas there was a significant worsening in patients treated with TIPS. The effect was most pronounced at one month; the values returned toward baseline at six months but were still significantly higher than in the EST arm.
