Aggressive control of lipids decreases the progression of saphenous vein graft disease

Aggressive control of lipids decreases the progression of saphenous vein graft disease
In the Post Coronary Artery Bypass Graft trial of 1353 patients, aggressive treatment of low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol with lovastatin and, if needed, cholestyramine to achieve an LDL <100 mg/dL (2.6 mmol/L) reduced the progression of saphenous vein graft disease, regardless of the number of coronary heart disease (CHD) risk factors. All of the differences were significant except for an almost significant trend in patients with no CHD risk factors (p = 0.07).
Data from Campeau L, Hunninghake DB, Knatterud GL, et al, and Post CABG Trial Investigators. Circulation 1999; 99:3241.
