Mallory-Denk bodies in alcohol-associated hepatitis
High power view of a liver biopsy in alcohol-associated hepatitis shows macrovesicular fat and prominent ballooning degeneration of hepatocytes. Many ballooned cells contain Mallory-Denk hyalines (arrows), which are degenerated intermediate cytokeratin filaments. Surrounding these cells are neutrophilic infiltrates. Similar changes can occur in metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), although in general, the Mallory-Denk hyalines are less well-formed in MASH.
