Nontunneled central venous catheters according to age and weight in children
Age (Weight) Venous catheters
French size* Length Wire diameter Needle gauge
mm inches
Neonates (2.5 to 5 kg) 3.0 5 to 12 cm 0.46 0.018 21
Infants [1 to 12 months] (5 to 10 kg) 4.0 5 to 12 cm 0.46 to 0.53 0.018 to 0.021 21, 20, 18
>1 to 12 years (10 to 40 kg) 5.0 5 to 25 cm 0.53 to 0.89 0.021 to 0.035 20, 18
≥13 years (≥50 kg) 7.0 5 to 30 cm 0.89 0.035 18, 16
This table provides suggested central venous catheter sizes for nontunneled catheters placed in the femoral, internal jugular, and subclavian veins. Another way to estimate central venous line (CVL) diameter is to measure the diameter of the vein to be accessed with ultrasound and then selecting the French gauge roughly corresponding to the vein diameter. For example, if the uncompressed vein measures 7 mm across, use a 7 Fr catheter.
* Size refers to the outer diameter of the catheter. To convert to millimeters, divide the French size by 3. For example, 3.0 French = 1 mm.
