Measurement of the pectus severity index and pectus correction index for pectus excavatum

Measurement of the pectus severity index and pectus correction index for pectus excavatum
Calculations:
  • Pectus severity index (PSI) = A/B
  • Pectus correction index (PCI) = 100 × (C – B)/C

Either PSI ≥3.25 or PCI ≥28% have been used as a threshold for surgical correction. These measures are correlated, but PCI may be superior to PSI as a measure of pectus deformity in individuals with nonstandard chests, ie, those with unusually broad or narrow chests[1].

PSI: pectus severity index (also known as the Haller index); PCI: pectus correction index.
