Intestinal metaplasia of the distal esophagus

Medium power view of a biopsy specimen from the distal esophagus revealed intestinal metaplasia diagnostic of Barrett's esophagus. The diagnostic feature is the presence of goblet cells (arrow), characterized by apical basophilic cytoplasm, a dilated lateral cell border and a compressed basal nucleous.
