An approach to repeat vaccination in a patient with a past vaccine reaction

An approach to repeat vaccination in a patient with a past vaccine reaction
Patients who report reactions to vaccines can almost always receive additional doses of that vaccine if indicated. The above approach stratifies patients based on signs and symptoms of the initial reaction. True IgE-mediated reactions to vaccines are rare (approximately 1 in 1 million for most vaccines).

COVID-19: coronavirus disease 2019; IgE: immunoglobulin E.

* The term "immunization stress-related responses" (ISRRs) was introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic to describe the symptoms that were repeatedly reported in response to the COVID-19 vaccines, but ISRRs are seen with other vaccines as well. In addition to the symptoms listed above, ISRRs can involve hypertension, vasovagal reactions leading to lightheadedness or syncope, dissociative neurologic symptoms, weakness, abnormal movements, or speech difficulties.
